John Gale Kenney was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1950. His mother was a passionate artist and fostered his early interest in art. While attending Washington & Jefferson College, he discovered his own interest in painting. Although a science major, he studied painting with Paul Edwards and became heavily influenced by a friend of Paul’s - Andy Warhol. The visual pop art movement of the period spoke to John and he found inspiration in the industrial city-scape of his native Pittsburgh. John maintained an interest in painting throughout his career as a plastic surgeon. He seriously returned to painting in 2007 studying exclusively with nationally recognized artist, sculptor and teacher - Rick Weaver in Charlottesville, Va. John’s works have been widely displayed in Charlottesville and central Virginia. His style has been described as realistic impressionism. His medium of choice is oil on canvas.

He currently lives with his wife, Caroline, in Beaufort, SC.
