Painting on fabric allows me to express ideas different from on paper or canvas inspiring me to design wearable art, as well as framed silk paintings. It is the art collector’s choice.
It was a trip to China that filled my senses with the many wonders of silk, especially the flow of paint and dyes on its fibers. The history of silk painting and its many techniques have existed in production before 6802 BC. Silk is an animal protein similar to our own hair and has a sensuous, warm and luxurious touch, qualities which have made it a valuable source of trade for centuries. This has brought new excitement to my scarves and they have been very popular in the boutiques and galleries of Beaufort.
My artistic motivation and enthusiasm began in my mother’s garden at a very young age. I found drawing and sketching the flowers a soothing pastime and spent many memorable days drawing and painting with simple watercolors. Throughout my life I have continued to use the shapes and colors of nature as both a realistic and abstract means of leading me through my work. My love for painting is in every stroke of my brush as I escape into the visual work. I enjoy the freshness of wet paint and use my imagination to add pure pigment with nontraditional substances to attain depth and texture.
My work has appeared in local galleries and juried exhibitions. I studied sculpture and many of my pieces have found a home with collectors. I have experimented with many mediums, watercolor, acrylic, pastels and pen and ink.
In 2012 I worked under the guidance of Suzanne Punch, Master Silk Painter, in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where every day we experimented with different dyes, silks and substances. Developing a willingness to explore is a great feeling of accomplishment. After returning home, I knew that silk painting was my destiny.
The Soul of Silk will be paired with framed silk paintings and a coordinated, one of a kind silk scarf.
Before migrating to South Carolina, I retired as Executive VP of the largest privately owned medical billing company in New York State. My husband Ralph and I reside on Lady’s Island and enjoy the blending our two families. I can now concentrate on my true passion, creating art. My studio at home is a priceless gift.
