Painting the Desert

“The Desert is the threshold to the meeting ground of God and man. It is the scene of the exodus.
You do not settle there, you pass through. One then ventures on … because one is driven by the
Spirit towards the Promised Land. But it is only promised to those who are able to chew sand for
forty years without doubting their invitation to the feast in the end.” Alessandro Pronzato

Local abstract artist Linda Tully will feature a series of new oil and cold wax paintings this September
at the Beaufort Art Association in historic Downtown Beaufort. The exhibit, titled “Painting the
Desert,” reflects the artist’s journey post-pandemic as she looks with hope toward a new day
dawning while she “chews sand.”

As a young adult living in Atlanta, Linda revisited her childhood dream of becoming a graphic artist
and attended the Art Institute of Atlanta. That “career” was short-lived and a season of travel began,
and she and her husband ended up in Beaufort, via a memorable stop on a sailboat 25 years ago.
Shortly after moving to Beaufort, Linda joined the Beaufort Art Association and participated in a
weekly painter’s group where she honed her oil painting skills. She was first exposed to cold wax
through a workshop led by renowned cold wax medium artist Rebecca Crowell. Linda fell hard and
fast for the medium and abstract expressionism! She enjoys the challenge of creating a painting that
is process driven, and though she has learned various “techniques” in applying the oil and cold wax
mixture, Linda finds immense satisfaction in the process of uncovering a mystery in the making while
she paints.
